Congratulations to Dampier community champion John Lally who was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award at the City of Karratha's annual Australia Day Awards on Tuesday.

John has been consistently and tirelessly giving to the City of Karratha community for the past 25 years and is a worthy winner.

The awards are an opportunity to thank and acknowledge local citizens such as John who have made a significant contribution to their community.

The Australia Day Award recipients embody the community spirit which makes the City of Karratha a great place to live.

The Woodside-operated North West Shelf (NWS) Project and Pluto LNG have proudly sponsored significant awards since 2012.

The NWS Project is committed to minimising its impact on the natural environment so it is appropriate that it again proudly supports the Environment Award in 2016. The award recognises individuals who demonstrate a genuine passion for the environment and strive to improve it through conservation, preservation, protection, replenishment and education.

This year's winner is Rose Best for her commitment to protecting and rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife in the Pilbara through the Pilbara Wildlife Carers Association.

Pluto LNG recognises the importance of investing in and supporting youth, our future leaders, and has again sponsored the Young Citizen of the Year Award. This award goes to a person under the age of 25 who has made a significant contribution to the City of Karratha community during the past year or has given outstanding service over a number of years.

The winner of this year's award is Jordan Grigson, who has demonstrated excellent leadership in the community and was also a finalist in the 2015 City of Karratha Community Sports Awards.

Jordan has made a valuable contribution to local sporting clubs and acts as a positive role model and mentor to junior players.
