Woodside Cancer Research Fellow Announced

Internationally renowned cancer researcher, Professor Ruth Ganss, has been awarded the prestigious Woodside Cancer Research Fellowship to continue her ground breaking work at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research.

The Fellowship has been established this year with a donation to the Perkins of $1M over five years by Woodside.

Professor Ganss, who is scientific head of Cancer and Cell Biology at the Perkins, also leads her own Laboratory which is focused on finding a way to effectively treat pancreatic and liver cancer tumours.

Woodside’s CFO Lawrie Tremaine, said Woodside was proud to support the fellowship as part of its community investment program.

“Woodside’s support of cancer research has been inspired by the dedication and commitment of our employees and their passion to make a difference,” Mr Tremaine said.

In thanking Woodside, Professor Peter Leedman, the Director of the Perkins, said that the support had enabled the Perkins to retain an outstanding researcher whose projects would have the potential to yield valuable findings that would increase the effectiveness of cancer therapies.

“While the survival rates for many cancers have improved because of medical research, there are some cancers for which the prognosis is poor and it is these cancers that are the focus of our research at the Perkins,” said Professor Leedman.

Last year more than 100 Woodside employees took part in the MACA Ride to Conquer Cancer to raise funds for cancer research at the Perkins. Riding alongside them was keen cyclist, Professor Ganss. She looks forward to riding with them in October this year.

“It’s an honour to be selected as the inaugural Woodside Cancer Research Fellow,” Professor Ganss said.
